FINANCIAL ANALYST 

INVEST OTTAWA– FINANCE

WHY THIS ROLE: 

 

Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, the Financial Analyst will be responsible for performing a variety of accounting functions as well as supporting all Invest Ottawa and Bayview Yards projects. 

 

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING: 

 

Accounting: 

  • Preparing monthly reconciliations for key general ledger accounts and financial reporting groupings 
  • Performing forecast and variance analysis for selected business units and projects  
  • Assisting in the preparation of month-end financial statements  
  • Aiding in the preparation of quarterly forecasts for select business units 
  • Aiding in the preparation of the annual budget 
  • Interacting with employees and contractors regarding their claims/invoices 
  • Acting as a backup for Payroll 
  • Assisting external program auditors at year-end as needed 

 

Project: 

The Financial Analyst will perform the following activities for a portfolio of assigned projects: 

  • Acting as liaison and primary contact with Invest Ottawa’s partners of projects  
  • Preparing project reconciliations on a monthly basis  
  • Responsible in part for the end of month closing procedures related to project expense and revenue tracking (accruals, allocations, and deferred revenue)    
  • Providing input on annual project budgets  
  • Collaborating closely with Program Financial Analyst on salary and overhead allocation methodologies 
  • Managing financial reporting schedule on finances and collection follow up 
  • Contributing to draft budgets for inclusion in project proposals 
  • Preparing project claims for various projects as required by the project agreement 
  • Monitoring actuals and forecasts against project budgets and agreements  
  • Participating in project meetings with the program delivery team  
  • Thorough understanding of the various contribution agreements and expense eligibility

Qualifications

AT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED: 

 

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration or related field 
  • Accounting designation (CPA or a candidate) 
  • 5+ years of experience in an accounting and financial analysis function 
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting procedures and principles including accounting controls 
  • Solid understanding of project and fund accounting in a not-for-profit setting 
  • Comfortable with new technologies: the ability to learn new accounting and CRM applications quickly 
  • Strong service orientation, interpersonal and communication skills: ability to build trust quickly with stakeholders (internal and external) 
  • Ability to understand, interpret and follow requirements of funding agreements 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, with strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel 
  • Strong math skills are required to complete day-to-day tasks 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities and tight deadlines
